Q: Military History? |
A: In 1968, with the draft hot on my tail, I signed up for the Air Force in Photo Reconnaissance (I worked at Hallmark Cards in photo lithography). I took military leave from Hallmark Cards and reported to the induction center. Well! They somehow had an inch thick file on my previously bad ear that was fixed to perfectly working order by using an experimental antibiotic. I went back to Hallmark that same day. Hallmark credited me with 2 weeks vacation since I had returned from military leave. The VP of finance told me it would be my only GI benefit. lol!
So, always buy Hallmark Cards, they support our military and appreciate service to the country. Over 40 years of plugging Hallmark I think I made up for the two weeks they gave me. lol |

Q: Favorite High School Memory? |
A: David Kendall, Assistant Principle, had just started and sent memo after memo to the teachers with one new rule after another. In the morning, the home room teacher would roll her eyes every time there was a new memo (and a new rule) on her desk. One of the new rules was a strict 'report to the office' rule if entering class after the bell. Teacher discretion would not be tolerated! Three late arrivals in a semester would result in a 3 day suspension. Well, I was late three times! I was sent to the office as mandated. Honest to God, I was sitting next to these guys throwing a knife at their feet (shoes off) to see who could get the closest. And this was in the waiting area to see David Kendall! My eyes got as big as saucers! David informed me that I was suspended for 3 days and to bring a parent the next day. Well, I just thought, "This is stupid"! I came to school the next day without a parent. Of course, the home room teacher sent me to the office once again. David Kendall called my mother on the telephone. I must explain that my mom had six older sons. And I was about to find out what an angel I was compared to any of them. lol! My mom would get excited on occasion, and this, it turned out, was one of those occasions. Kendall had to hold the phone at arms length to prevent his eardrums from bursting! I could hear her clear across the desk! A litany of the most terrible stuff you every heard about anybody committing burst quickly over the phone like firecrackers on the the fourth of July. Time after time, my mom asked if I had committed this or that terrible deed. After each one Kendall would exclaim, "No Mrs Werp, Richard did not do anything like that". It went on and on until "No! Mrs Werp" reminded me of the chant "Praise be to God" at church. My mom got more and more excited with each "No! Mrs Werp". Finally, she hysterically shouted "My God! What has my son done!" Well, Kendall just told her he called her by mistake and to not worry about anything. Everything was just fine with Richard, he explained . He was doing well in school, he sheepishly added. He is a fine young man, he finally murmered . lol! If you thought my eyes were big when the "others" were practicing knife throwing, they were actually tightly shut compared to how big they got after that tirade. David Kendall, after that, always greeted me by name whenever we passed in the hallway. It is my understanding that he went on to receive many awards for his working with students. I have often wondered if he remembers that day as vividly as I have remembered it. |
